Sea of Thieves, Rare's swashbuckling adventure, has had plenty of criticism over the lack of content but their latest update proves those days are long gone, as Rare counted 8.4 million players, 2 million of which came after the update.
Granted, Sea of Thieves has been a mainstay on Xbox Game Pass, so extrapolating sales would require more detailed data, but this is a live service game after all, and they tend to earn their gold elsewhere.
Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate seems to think so too, as he said that the live service aspect of the game means they're just beginning in a sense.
However, Neate also mentioned that Rare has to rethink their approach so as to set a sustainable cadence of updates, both for Sea of Thieves players and the developers.
"These are the two pillars of our plans going forward - it's cadence and regularity for the players, but it's also making it so that there's flexibility in the plan as to when some things land", he said during the E3 live stream.
He pointed out that as long as they can keep churning out Sea of Thieves content to players on a regular basis, it won't matter as much when the bigger stuff lands. At the same time, this leaves the team ample time to come up with new stuff.

Neate also discussed pets in Sea of Thieves, again, which goes to show how incredibly eagerly anticipated feature it is.
While they're definitely coming, Neate said that the team wanted them to feel more organic and part of the world of Sea of Thieves, with a "social value" to their crews, hence the delays.
