Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed that FromSoftware's next action RPG will be heavily based on Dark Souls' gameplay mechanics but with vast and open environment. Apparently, this will create drastic changes in battles.

The creators of Dark Souls and Bloodborne - FromSoftware - have announced their brand new action RPG just a couple of days ago and just like earlier rumoured and reported, it's been made in collaboration with the creator of best-selling book series Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin.

In the latest interview with IGN, Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki shed some light on some of the new features and how similar will the game be to Dark Souls.

According to Miyazaki, the combat in Elden Ring will be heavily influenced by Dark Souls' gameplay mechanics, so get ready for another set of playthroughs packed with frustrations and ultra tough bosses.

“Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG with a fantasy setting. Gameplay-wise, it’s heavily based on Dark Souls,” Miyazaki told IGN.

As for the changes that FromSoftware are introducing with the upcoming title, well, apparently, the combat will be fundamentally different due to the game's vast open world.

"However, that doesn’t mean that it plays out in the same way. With a more open and vast environment, the way combat plays out becomes fundamentally different," Hidetaka explained.

Judging by his comments, it's clear that Elden Ring will indeed offer a bit different experience than FromSoftware's earlier games like the Dark Souls trilogy or Bloodborne.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice probably was the most "open world game" in their catalogue but still wasn't really considered as a true open world game. However, with Elden Ring, it's looking very likely that FromSoftware are doing something much bigger in terms of the game's world.

Miyazaki also confirmed that players will be able to travel through the world on a horse, encountering enemies while riding. And last but not least, the world won't feature towns or cityscapes with NPCs, but players can expect village ruins, similar to those found in Miyazaki's other titles.
