Dauntless off to a great start, exceeds 5 million players already

Phoenix Labs have announced that their free-to-play action RPG Dauntless has sped past 5 million players in less than a week from launch, and even the developer seems to have underestimated just how many people will give their game a go.

Dauntless launched on 21 May 2019, and already on the first day, it had more than 500 thousand players, so Phoenix Labs are obviously doing something right.

"More than FIVE MILLION players have answered the call and become Slayers. The Behemoth threat isn't slowing down and neither are we", they tweeted a few days ago.

All this interest came at a cost and the dev obviously wasn't ready for the massive surge of interest in Dauntless, and they've been trying to keep up with the numbers.

It's an ongoing battle too and Phoenix Labs provided a timeline of their server exploits in a tweet from yesterday, 27 May, writing that they had to increase capacities three times from 1pm to 3:20pm. And that's just yesterday.

Granted, it's not like Dauntless wasn't popular earlier, as they passed one million players two weeks into the beta, which was May 2018.

Fast forward a bit to July 2018 and Dauntless had 2 million and not even the launch of Monster Hunter: World, which has served as inspiration for the former, has managed to disrupt its growth.

In fact, for all the similarities, the two are still different beasts, no pun intended, but Dauntless being free-to-play obviously has its advantages when it comes to population.

Capcom recently revealed that Monster Hunter: World has passed 12.4 million units sold, so even with free-to-play, Phoenix Labs still have a lot to go to catch up. The early signs are good though, no doubt.

We expect Dauntless will keep growing to the point where it will be challenging Monster Hunter: World, which in live-service games tends to correlate with the quality of service and frequency of updates.
