Sony CEO and president Jim Ryan has teased a potential cross-gen multiplayer between the next-gen PlayStation and PlayStation 4. Ryan said that PS5's backwards compatibility will be incredibly powerful for keeping communities together.
A lot of rumours and official details about the next-gen PlayStation console have started to appear in the last month or two, suggesting that the official reveal could be closer than we expect.
Earlier this week, we got first gameplay footage of Insomniac's Spider-Man, running on next-gen PlayStation, side by side with Sony's current flagship PlayStation 4. Today, we have some new details about the backwards compatibility of the upcoming console and potentially a huge feature for PlayStation 4 users.
As reported by GamesRadar, in the same corporate strategy meeting where Sony compared Spider-Man loading times on two consoles, the company's bosses Jim Ryan and John Kodera also shed some light on how PS5 backwards compatibility will work, including multiplayer games.
Ryan said that is "incredibly important" to Sony because "the gaming community is somewhat tribal in its nature". The backwards compatibility gives Sony "the opportunity to migrate" these gaming communities from PlayStation 4 to next-gen and give them the ability to play the PS4 games they own on their new console with "groups of 10, 20, 50 gamers".
He continued by saying that the size of the community that was built over all these years is a "critical success factor" for Sony.
Deputy president John Kodera added that the goal is to bridge engaged players from the current generation to the next one. "Cross-generation the community can enjoy the games together," Kodera said.
At the moment, it is unknown how exactly will the whole cross-gen multiplayer function, but it's nice to see that Sony don't plan to forget PlayStation 4 players the moment they release the new console.
Next-gen PlayStation still doesn't have a release date but various rumours suggested that Sony could launch the new hardware sometime in mid or late 2020. As you may know, the console will feature AMD's GPU and CPU with ultra-fast SSD.
