It seems like only yesterday that we were all anxious to see whether Santa Monica Studio can change God of War, yet keep it the same. Having delivered, gloriously, the team are celebrating with a trailer, a free PS4 theme and avatar set.
Little did we know at the time that the period was way more nerve-wracking for director Cory Barlog and his team than for us, regardless of how attached you may have been to the Kratos of old.
Much like the team that's developed it, God of War has grown into something much bigger, evolving to tell of the most moving stories gaming has produced, and all that without shedding too much of its hard, deity-killing exterior.
Thankfully, it all culminated in an outpouring of love for Kratos' New Clothes, which ended up driving Barlog himself to tears. The moment seemed to kickstart its golden era of awards and accolades that haven't really stopped to this day.
Santa Monica Studio are celebrating in style, and as the trailer suggests this translates to 'we're celebrating with fans', starting with the PS4 dynamic theme, which you can pick up right away. Barlog and Co promise the theme "will bring you back to serenity with Kratos and Atreus in the Lake of Nine."
The studio are also rolling out the God of War Anniversary character PS4 avatar set, which will be available this Wednesday.
Just in case you're wondering, the team also wrote, "They'll both be free at PlayStation Store (search God of War), whether you own the game or not", which is a pretty nice touch.
Santa Monica also reflected on the sheer number of awards, accolades and community posts, which the trailer indicates are just as important to Barlog and Co as the awards, if not even more.
"Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing the new God of War and for helping Santa Monica Studio rise up to a new beginning as well. From our whole team to you, that has meant everything to us", they concluded.
