Although Heroes of the Storm's esports aspirations have fallen prey to Activision Blizzard's cost-cutting, the game is still alive and kicking, with the latest update announcing the end of paid loot boxes starting on 26 March 2019.
Although many feared that cancelling of Heroes of the Storm's esports competitions is just the beginning of the end, the size and scope of the latest patch sure don't suggest so.
Starting with loot boxes, Blizzard wrote that as of March, "all Loot chests earned through progression (except Hero-specific Chests), Heroes Brawl, or by spending Gold will be Caldeum Complex Loot Chests".
These chests cost 3,000 gold and guarantee at least one Caldeum Complex or previous Lunar New Year Spring event item. Also, the chests you get up to the date they're removed will not turn into Caldeum Complex ones.
The latest update to Heroes of the Storm brought about the expansion of hero roles. Blizzard are hoping this will make it easier to tell what role is best used for what purpose, something that's been increasingly more difficult as the game's roster expanded.
Heroes of the Storm's updated roles are Tank, Bruiser, Support, Healer, Melee Assassin and Ranged Assasin. If you're interested in the detailed changes to the classes, you can do so in Blizzard's blog post here.
As for the event, Heroes of the Storm is getting Caldeum Complex, a story set in Caldeum Arcopolis in 2103 AD, where "humans, mutants, machines and synthetics all struggle to find their place in the light of the neon glow beneath the towering monuments to capitalism lording over them."
Chromie, a hacker and an anti-corporate street artist, takes on a bunch of mega-corporations, trying to prevent the "cataclysmic force on the horizon".
Heroes of the Storm's new event comes with a Caldeum Complex quest chain as well, which includes tasks like making contact with opposing gangs, raiding research facilities and so on.
The update is live on the Public Test Realm until 25 March 2019, after which it goes live. You can find the full patch notes here.
