EA announced a new open world Star Wars game in 2017, and then kind of announced Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order at E3 2018. These are not the same game, which is good for the fans as the former one got cancelled due to roadmap issues.
Ragtag is the name of the Star Wars project that was started by Visceral Games, who met their untimely end in 2017. EA Vancouver was first assisting with the project, but took over entirely after Visceral's closure. It was later rebranded as Orca, but that project has been cancelled now as well.
According to Kotaku, Orca was supposed to be a massive open world game where players would be put in the shoes of "a scoundrel or a bounty hunter" who would explore planets and interact with their factions. EA didn't scrap the project due to cost-cutting apparently, but rather because of EA Vancouver's roadmap.
As the game was a big project, it would likely take years to develop and EA's shot callers were looking for something that can be released sooner. Enter Respawn Entertainment and the awkward announcement of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.
Currently, rumour has it that Jedi Fallen Order will land at some point in late 2020, in time for the new generation of consoles, which still don't have a release date and are being kept on the down low themselves. Kotaku also reported that no one at EA Vancouver was fired as a result of Orca's cancellation, which is one bright spot in this story.
On the flip side, it could mean Jedi Fallen Order is or might be a cramped game that's being shoehorned in just to follow the next Xbox and PlayStation console releases.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is still in development though, with no footage shown so it is too early to judge, but its saving grace could be Respawn Entertainment. They are the people who brought us Titanfall and Titanfall 2 after all, both of which are criminally underrated shooters.
