In spite of some more recent successes with H1Z1's PlayStation 4 performance, Daybreak Games can't seem to catch a proper break and their founder John Smedley estimates that as many as 70 workers have lost their jobs in the company.
Their official statement reads, "We are optimizing our structure to ensure we best position ourselves for continued success in the years to come. This effort has required us to make some changes within the organization and we are doing everything we can to support those impacted in this difficult time."
In other words, the company is trying to boost efficiency by downsizing and while they didn't provide exact numbers, Smedley did. He estimated that 70 workers, or around a third of Daybreak Games' workforce, have lost their jobs, although there are doubts as to the accuracy of his statements, since he's no longer at the company.
"Very sorry to hear about the layoffs at Daybreak. Those are good people that should still be working there 10 years from now if things were being well run", he wrote. In fact, this is their second round of layoffs in 2018, the first of which went down in April.
Having been behind the company's transition from Sony Online Entertainment into Daybreak Games before stepping down as CEO in 2015, Smedley should know a thing or two about its fortunes. He went on saying that he's "really really really angry" over this happening in December, implying that it doesn't really indicate class by their current management.
"As we look to improve efficiencies and realign resources, we remain focused on supporting our existing games and development of our future titles", Daybreak wrote. H1Z1: Just Survive was discontinued in October, which means one less title to support, while its battle royale edition had some success on PlayStation 4 consoles.
Ironically enough, Planetside 2 is still trudging along, in spite of Theybreak shifting focus to the next best thing at the time - H1Z1, half of which is now scrapped. Looks like the company could use some enlightenment, no?
