PlayStation 4 users have been reporting issues with the PSN service where they were targeted by malicious messages that would crash their system. Sony rolled out a hotfix post-haste but the new update may have plugged some holes as well.

Sony recently rolled out PlayStation 4 system update 6.02 but they didn't post any update notes. The update 447 MB large and is mandatory for all users. Those who had automatic system updates on have probably downloaded the update already, but those who ticked this box off may want to check for updates and instal them manually.

The only description Sony released with the update is that it "improves system performance", but considering that the bug that allowed malicious players to crash other users' systems by sending them messages with specific characters, it's safe to assume that this update plugged any holes in the system.

According to Ask PlayStation UK, the issue was patched before, since the official tweet came on 15 October 2018. The hotfix may not have been the definitive safeguard, but dummy PSN accounts shouldn't bother actual service users following update 6.02.

Just in case, it would be wise to keep your account security tight for the moment and limiting messages to friend list only would be the way to do so. The dust hasn't exactly settled yet from the security exploit and it's possible someone else might attempt security breaches in the near future.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is just over a week from release, so it would be nice if people could play the most anticipated release of 2018 without being bricked. The lack of Red Dead Online at launch may now prove to be a blessing in disguise as there would certainly be salty players in a multiplayer session that would resort to blocking your service.

Speaking of which, you will be able to start pre-loading Red Dead Redemption 2 on Friday, 19 October 2018, exactly seven days before it releases on 26 October 2018.
