SCUM doesn't go into Steam's Early Access until tomorrow, 29 August 2018, but the survival game is already making waves on Twitch, spending the best part of yesterday trailing Fortnite. Obviously, the dev is doing something right here.
At the time of writing, SCUM sits at 54,422 viewers and it has exchanged places with PUBG a few times while I'm writing this. It's certainly already a compliment to hang up there with the top dogs before Early Access and the likes of DrDisrespect, Shroud and Sacriel certainly helped. Note that the latter's DayZ expertise means a lot and he's probably still streaming if you're interested.
Developed by Gamepires and produced by Croteam, the guys you may know from Serious Sam and the Talos Principle, SCUM is marrying the battle royale formula used by Fortnite and PUBG, with traditional survival game like DayZ.
What this means in practice is that you're still battling it out on the map - there's just no storm circles or other mechanics that spurs you onwards. Not that you'll need them, because you'll be busy keeping yourself alive, which is no small task considering what sort of realism the devs went for.
Gamepires have already given us a taste of what to expect from SCUM back in pre-Alpha and, as you could've witnessed yourself, it's not just about getting food in - it has to come out as well. From what we've seen so far, the guys really nailed the balance between sustenance and just plain ol' fun.
The visuals are splendid as well and many Twitch viewers have already fallen for SCUM's graphics. SCUM's island has been modelled in meticulous detail, every 144 square kilometre of it. The photo below shows SCUM's map in comparison to Altis, Arma3's largest map that spans 270 kilometers, so there's plenty of room to play around on.
As SCUM's story goes, you and 63 other prisoners are placed on an island, where you serve as entertainment for the rich. Your ultimate task however is not killing everyone but taking out the implant and leaving the island, which lends itself well to SCUM's less pacey dynamic.
