Streets of Rage 4, the sequel to a classic beat 'em up trilogy has been announced out of the blue. The developers behind this fourth instalment will be Dotemu and Lizardcube from Paris, France and Guard Crush Games from Montreal, Canada.
Dotemu is listed as one of the developers for Streets of Rage 4 along with Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games, but the official statement coming off the reveal trailer says Dotemu are just handling publishing.
Streets of Rage oozes '90s feeling from the moment we see Axel's sneakers and the developers and publisher don't shy away from pointing it out, calling on SEGA's "iconic arcade brawler series known for its radical fights, jammin' '90s beats, dashing sparring gloves and bandanas".
While the original trilogy always featured three or more playable characters, only Axel and Blaze were present in each instalment. This is sort of the case with Streets of Rage 4, as they both make a return, but that's it. No other characters have been announced.
Planned features include hand-drawn visuals, classic mechanics with some new added on top of them and a new story. There is currently no explanation on what these new mechanics are though and the feature list is fairly barren. This begs for caution, just in case the release turns out to be another shallow nostalgia-driven cash grab.
According to DotEmu, Streets of Rage 4 will be playable solo or in co-op multiplayer. There was no mention of that multiplayer components nature - local or online? That will likely depend on platforms, which are currently unannounced. The beat em' up will definitely see a console release, so local multiplayer is almost a certainty.
Any other information, including a release date, pricing, or regional availability also remains unaccounted for. Interested brawl enthusiasts will just have to wait and soothe their nostalgia with what they already have on hand.
