In what has to be one of the most awkward moments in the world of gaming, former Nexon executive Vlad Coho planned to deliver a talk at DevGAMM conference titled "LawBreakers: How I Blew Millions Marketing the Biggest Flop of 2017".
Before we move on, Coho in the meantime cancelled his appearance at the conference and insists the entire matter is simply a misunderstanding caused by awkward wording. He maintains that the speech was intended to discuss his own personal shortcomings during the LawBreakers' marketing campaign and not attack Boss Key or anything of the sort. Nevertheless, it still awoke a few demons, most notably CliffyB himself.
I've got to admit though, my first reaction to reading "LawBreakers: How I Blew Millions Marketing the Biggest Flop of 2017" was of disgust, mostly for pretentious assumptions. No, I'm not talking about the biggest flop part, because that's probably true - I'm taking about the assumption that LawBreakers were marketed at all.
The development team at Boss Key Productions with CliffyB at the helm actually did a good job in their department. LawBreakers is a solid game that had the unfortunate fate to fall to a terribly confused marketing strategy. Initially slated to be "double A" the game took a sharp turn, losing in the process much of the crowd that was actually interested.
Without a clear marketing game, aimed demographic and any meaningful hype-churning mechanisms, the game appears to have been killed by obscurity more than anything else. It still has fans, it's just that there's not enough of them to start a match.
Ultimately though, Coho will not be holding his speech but that didn't stop CliffyB from reacting to one twitter user's opinion. I must admit that the uninformed yet unsympathetic nature of the user's statement really warranted the type of response CliffyB offered.
On a related note, LawBreakers have still gone free to play in the end and the game is actually still up, until September 2018 that is. Wouldn't it be great if everyone went and proved Coho wrong by flooding LawBreakers' servers? A man can dream.
