Epic Games have rolled out the 5.1 update to Fortnite: Battle Royale adding a new weapon in compact SMG, reintroducing the Playground LTM and kicking off the first of many Fortnite birthday events with cake and special cosmetic prizes.
I kid you not, Epic actually scattered pieces of cake across the map, which heal you for 5 health and 5 shield instantly. As you'd expect, the Battlebus and Supply Drops will get decorated to reflect Fortnite's celebrations as well.
Fortnite's birthday event includes three challenges - playing 14 matches, dealing 1,000 damage to opponents and dancing in front of 10 different birthday cakes on the map. Completing them earns you 5,000 XP, Fortnite Birthday emoticon and Happy Birthday spray, while all three earn you the Birthday Cake back bling.
After retiring the tactical SMG to the Vault in the earlier update, Epic added the compact SMG, which comes in epic and legendary flavours, dealing 23 and 24 damage respectively. It uses light ammo, packs 50 rounds and can be found just about anywhere.
Fortnite's Playground LTM is back for another limited run on Wednesday, 25 July 2018, this time with team switch options, golf carts and 10 times the ammo. Players respawn immediately, unless of course they're chowed up by the storm so other than encouraging players to go creative, the Playground mode promises to be a worthy practice pad as well.
As for the general Fornite: Battle Royale changes, Epic have tweaked supply drop loot rates, as well as building material health. Wood and stone walls have had their health toned down while metal walls got a buff. Storm circle timings were altered slightly as well, although they're a bit too long to list here so you can find them in Fortnite's 5.1 patch notes here.
Before we all delve into some delicious Fortnite cake, it would be wise to reflect on how far a game can go in a single year. Fortnite: Battle Royale was an experiment that has turned into a phenomena, despite its timeline coinciding with the original battle royale phenomena in Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. Well. Next please.
