Nintendo's Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold more than any other game in the franchise in the year since its release. Having been released for both Switch and Wii U, the combined numbers reach almost 10 million units sold so far.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reached 8.48 million copies sold on Nintendo Switch and approximately another 1.5 million on Wii U, rounding that number out to an impressive 10 million.

Breath of the Wild launched on 03 March 2017, and besides becoming the most profitable instalment in the series' history, it is considered as an essential game for purchasers of the Nintendo Switch. The game has players control Link for what might feel like the 80th time in his quest to save the kingdom of Hyrule and Princess Zelda from the big bad Ganon who keeps kidnapping her and locking her up.

In total, the series has sold over 80 million copies as of 2017 if we include every possible game made in the Zelda universe. It's a wonder many still confuse the main character Link with Zelda, which causes the abrupt cessation of their patience.

The Wii U and Switch versions of Breath of the Wild differ in terms of technical quality. When played on a TV, the Switch produces an image quality of 900p, while the Wii U version renders at 720p. The only other notable audio-visual difference is that the Switch has higher quality environmental sounds. There is also the small detail of detachability of the Switch console, which enables players to take Breath of the Wild along with them instead of having to play in their houses.

Around 18 million Switch units have been sold since the platform's release, which means more than 55 per cent of Switch owners have bought Breath of the Wild.

Before Breath of the Wild, the Twilight Princess instatement held the championship belt for most units sold in the franchise with numbers reaching almost 9 million copies. All of these titles and profit margins would possibly be void if we included the amount of money made with every possible remaster and spin-off in the franchise.
