Of course, Xbox Live Gold membership means these games aren't really hundred per cent free, but they're free enough to satisfy our love towards cheapskating as a sport. This time around, uncle Microsoft has got four titles for its players.

First in line is The Witness, Thekla, Inc's 3D stylish puzzler, which only launched some two years ago. The game has you running around various panels containing puzzles, which grants you further access into the world of The Witness.

Note that The Witness was launched to great critical acclaim and is lauded by many as a must-play masterpiece even today. Seeing as how it's free - you owe it to yourself to at least give it a go.

Next up is Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft's take on blade wielding conspiracies of the Victorian era London. You may recall the instalment, if for nothing else, then for the grappling hook it brought to Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise.

With the Syndicate having launched slightly upwards of two years ago, it's well worth revisiting the Assassin's Creed franchise over. That's if you played it - if you haven't, it's time to question your choices in life.

The remaining two games are Xbox 360 games and Microsoft say you can play them on Xbox One with backward compatibility. They may not be as enticing as the Xbox One freebies, but they're worth a look.

First up is Disney and Pixar's Cars 2, a racing game based on the animated movie bearing the same name. The Cars 2 game is notable for having all the actors featured in the movie, although it didn't fare as well when viewed through the racing-game lenses. Of course, there was no free in the title, which most certainly would've helped.

Last but most certainly not least is EA's and Visceral Games' Dead Space 2, scifi horror game that may be the oldest game of the bunch, but may well be the first game you should sink your cheap teeth into.

Dead Space 2 is widely regarded as one of the best game sequels to be found and now being one of the free-est ones, it's a no brainer.
