Sea of Thieves hits 1 million players in 48 hours, Xbox One X patch due next week

Sea of Thieves' sailing into the world may have been marred by many a server issue but these have Rare-ly been game breaking. With the Sea of Thieves already hitting stellar figures, Rare's video explains server issues and the first patch.

The video has Rare head honcho Craig Duncan and Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate talking about all the issues plaguing their swashbuckling adventure, namely: access issues, delayed rewards and achievements, temporary missing items and performance issues.

In regards to access issues, Rare say they were taken aback with the sheer amount of people coming in for Sea of Thieves, with the population quadrupling that of their larger test. In fact, join rates were up to 5,000 people at one moment, hitting 1 million unique users in just 48 hours.

Sea of Thieves access issues are apparently quite common during peak time in Europe, which is at about 9pm, but when the US East Coast, West Coast and Europe meet, all hell breaks loose. The devs insisted on ensuring that players who are in-game are not affected though, so if you're in - make sure you stay in.

Executive producer Joe Neate said that players need not worry over rewards that have seemingly not registered, claiming that server load elsewhere can in fact delay the rewards from arriving, not from registering.

Delayed achievements have also been reported, but Rare says that was a conscious decision to ensure as much focus and infrastructure was directed at other parts of Sea of Thieves, especially the key gameplay ones.

Rare said that temporary missing items is a bug that, although fixable once players purchase something, requires a client-side fix, meaning a Sea of Thieves patch. The company does already have a fix, with the company considering the timing at the moment. 

Neate conceded that Xbox One X suffers from occasional issues in "specific areas in the game" and said it will most likely roll out "sometime early next week", when we should apparently expect the rest of Sea of Thieves stability fixes and other tweaks Rare already has in store.
