Put away your PCs and consoles ladies, there is a new kid in town. Well, to be fair, the "mobile" kid has been kicking consoles and PCs around for 4 years in a row, but the latest figures make PC console wars look like a fight for scraps.
Well, this may be the first time that the ancient saying 'Buy cheap, buy twice' has rang true, but in a completely opposite sense. Namely, the mobile market has virtually humiliated its gaming brethren, the PC and consoles, for the third year running.
The numbers are pretty incredible to be honest, with the market more than doubling the total spending on PC and Mac games. If you think consoles fared any better, think again, as the mobile market overdid them by 3.6 times. Now think about that again - 3.6 times.
Of course, this is not unexpected as the mobile market was always going that way. A mere decade ago however, games found on mobile phones were more like gimmicks for enticing buyers into shelling out for very modern bricks than actual.
Fast forward to today, and mobile markets drive many a gaming trend. Games that barely ran on high end computers back then are easily manageable by the most meagre of mobiles, providing a nice platform to rehash or simply advertise the full featured games on PC and consoles.
Just to put things in perspective, the mobile gaming market first outran its much larger competitors back in 2014, albeit on an individual basis. However by 2016, mobile gaming numbers exceeded those of PC, Mac and consoles combined - a testament to market trends and endless commutes no longer sprinkled with boredom.
Naturally, we're not talking about competing platforms, since pretty much everyone has a mobile device of some sort. It is however pretty interesting to see how many cheap games tend to overrun even the triplest of A titles. Like we said - buy cheap AND buy twice.
