With the nation's revered monarch Queen Wilhemina at the tiller, the Netherlands looks set to be a powerful trading and seafaring civ - and don't forget those all-conquering polders.

Civilization VI's Rise & Fall expansion will see the Netherlands added to the game as a seafaring and trading civ. It is the second of the nine new leaders and eight new civs announced before the expansion goes live on February 8th, 2018, following the announcement of Korea last week.

Building Campuses, Industrial Zones and Theatre Squares next to a waterway provides major adjacency bonuses with the Grote Rivieren unique ability. All available adjacent tiles are absorbed once a Habour District is completed - a pretty powerful territorial gain mechanism.

Bringing the De Zeven Provinciën-class ships as its unique unit - with an attack range and movement bonus -  the Netherlands can protect its valuable Harbor Districts and trade routes in the mid-game.

Queen Wilhemina herself brings the Radio Oranje unique ability - reflecting her famous and inspiring speeches to her people while in forced exile in London during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Domestic trading routes - to and from her cities - bring a bonus to the new Loyalty mechanic in the originating city. Those to foreign cities bring a culture bonus.

Now - and most importantly for veteran Civ players (and those inclined to memes) - the Netherlands' unique improvement is the Polder. These are placed on "water tiles with sufficient adjacent coastline" and bring food, production and some housing. From the video released along with the announcement, it would appear Polders are a maybe a little easier to place than in Civ V. Making them even more important. And pretty. They also upgrade with some civic and technology advances.
