Crowbar Collective will be pushing the release of the final piece to their Valve sanctioned Half-Life redo into December, and they promise that this is the final delay. Xen seems to be shaping up nicely in spite of, or maybe exactly because of these frequent delays.

The final part of Black Mesa, Crowbar Collective's overhaul of Half-Life, Xen was supposed to arrive by the end of this Summer. The development team has announced today that it won't be able to meet the deadline.

"We know that this is not what anyone would want to hear, but after taking a long and hard look at what we want to achieve, we have decided that this is for the best. We do not want to compromise on Xen’s quality in any way. That said, we consider December to be a do-or-die deadline", was more or less the gist of the announcement.

As a small compensation for the delay, the team has shared a few exterior screenshots of Xen, and made a general progress report regarding the entire project. Work seems to have been done on improving the lighting system and tweaks to the way weapons are handled by various models, among other more subtle changes.

Has working on a Half-Life project made the team switch over to Valve-time? In any case, a do-or-die deadline sounds pretty serious, but we will know whether the wait is worth it in December.

It is also worth nothing that Xen is generally considered one of Half-Life's weakest parts, so it isn't too great a surprise that Crowbar Collective is having trouble making it click within their Half-Life 2.0 project.
