Bioware Montreal has been broken up to support the company's remaining studios, with the now smaller core team tasked with ongoing repairs on Andromeda. Bioware's current remaining projects will be unaffected.
Zombie Bioware has lost another limb. A number of BioWare Montreal employees have been transferred to other studios within EA, while those remaining will continue support for Mass Effect: Andromeda and aid in BioWare's current project code named Dylan.
This leaves the Mass Effect series and a potential sequel for Andromeda an uncertainty. While the franchise might still make a profit in the future, EA's decision to downsize the Montreal studio makes it clear that shareholders or some higher-ups weren't happy with the game's performance.
"Our teams at BioWare and across EA put in tremendous effort bringing Mass Effect Andromeda to players around the world. Even as BioWare continues to focus on the Mass Effect Andromeda community and live service, we are constantly looking at how we’re prepared for the next experiences we will create", an EA representative told Kotaku.
The statement further dissolves into PR-speak, but it is clear that Andromeda's controversial launch is leaving its first recognisable marks on the studio. Combined with the recent announcement of BioWare's non-Mass Effect IP will be delayed, a lot of shuffling around and head scratching seems to be going on at EA in an attempt to minimise the damage Andromeda's reception apparently caused.
We would like to remark that such events aren't unusual after Electronic Arts acquires a studio and Zombie BioWare doesn't look like it will be an exception. Mythic Entertainment, Bullfrog, Westwood and Pandemic Studios have suffered similar fates in the past.
