Half Life 2 - G-Man

Lines of dialogue and other spoken or written text in video games gives us a deeper understanding of the game and its lore. A good quote can make you think, other times laugh or rage quit, and here I'm listing a couple of each.

Most video games have top-notch writing behind them, and it shines through. Video game dialogue, graffiti on the walls, random conversations and throw-away remarks by the NPCs more often than not hold precious nuggets of wisdom, comedy, life lessons and everything in between.

Today, we're going to list some of the quotes that outlived their respective games and crawled their way into the everyday lives of the non-gamer community.

I'll just list these and see what happens. I'm still contemplating weather or not I should comment on these. We'll see how it goes.

Half-Life 2, G-Man: "The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world."

This one is spoken by the G-man at the beginning of the second game in the series. During the introductory cutscene, G-Man wakes Gordon from stasis and delivers the quote.

BioWareMass Effect 3 - JavikMass Effect 3 - Javik

Mass Effect 3, Javik: "Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls, and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer."

Asking the important questions, Javik! This quote puts into question every battle ever fought over an imagined concept. Javik is the only survivor "of the ancient Prothean race. After being preserved in stasis for over 50,000 years, he is revived and seeks to wreak vengeance on the Reapers for the demise of his people." He is available through the Mass Effect 3: From Ashes DLC pack.

Dishonored, Emily Kaldwin: "It’s a funny thing, ambition. It can take one to sublime heights or harrowing depths. And sometimes they are one and the same."

Emily is a little girl in the first Dishonored game, bored by history and geography but eager to learn sword fighting and sailing. Her abduction sets the game's events into motion.

Red Dead Redemption, John Marston: "Some trees flourish, others die. Some cattle grow strong, others are taken by wolves. Some men are born rich enough and dumb enough to enjoy their lives. Ain’t nothing fair."

John Marston is a man of little faith and has strong feelings of dislike towards the members of the bird population. He was young when he lost his father and now his son is growing up without a dad as well.

Had enough of the mopiness? Lets go into something more cheerful.

The Legend of Zelda, Old Man: "It’s dangerous to go alone, take this!"

The quote is spoken by an unnamed old man in The Legend of Zelda game from 1986. Link then receivers a sword which will help him defeat Ganon and save the princess. Thanks to the Internet, the quote took on a life of its own and continues to be spoken by gamers and non-gamers alike.

NintendoHalf Life 2 - G-ManThe Legend of Zelda

Duke Nukem 3D, Duke Nukem: "It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum... and I'm all outta gum."

Duke Nukem 3D is chock-full of movie references and funny quotes, but this one takes the cake. The phrase is referencing a 1988 sci-fi movie They Live. Other movies referenced in the game include Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, Die Hard and more.

Portal 2, Wheatley: "Most test subjects do experience some cognitive deterioration after a few months in suspension. Now you've been under for... quite a lot longer, and it's not out of the question that you might have a very minor case of serious brain damage. But don't be alarmed, alright? Although, if you do feel alarm, try to hold onto that feeling because that is the proper reaction to being told you have brain damage."

That was a long one. Happens during the first few minutes of the second Portal game and, if you're new to the series, shows you exactly what it's all about. Quirky, funny and bizarre, every emotion in the entire dialogue is hit in perfect order and with perfect timing through the entire game.

NintendoHalf Life 2 - G-ManSuper Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. Toad: "Thank you Mario! But our Princess is in another castle!"

Disappointment and frustration ensue every time this phrase is used. Mario from the Super Marion Bros. hears it time and time again after defeating one of Bowser's decoys only to find Toad who tells him hiss princess is not there.

Pokemon series: "It’s super effective!"

First released in 1996, Pokemon sparked many things, among which is this phrase. It's visible whenever a creature uses a power move which deals additional damage. The success of the franchise propelled the quote into pop culture and its now being used to describe a situation in which a performed action is particularly effective against another party. The phrase can be used along the expression "A wild X appears" which is another in-game message from the Pokemon franchise.

Bandai NamcoHalf Life 2 - G-ManDark Souls

Dark Souls: "YOU DIED"

"Thank you Mario! But our Princess is in another castle!" has nothing on this one. The most common in-game message in the Dark Souls series, many a rage-quit has happened as a result these two little words. There is nothing you can do now, except start again from the latest bonfire, and try to git gud.
