World of Tanks controversial 9.18 patch has dropped on the EU and RU servers. With major changes to artillery, new tier X light tanks and the improved matchmaker - it should be good news. However, the new lights seem irrelevant when compared to tier X mediums and the new artillery stun mechanic has already upset a lot of players on the US server, where the patch dropped earlier.

World of Tanks' 9.18 update has now dropped on the EU and RU servers, after being introduced last week on the lower population US servers. It's a massive change to the popular armoured vehicle shooter - but have Wargaming lost their bottle and messed up?

Patch notes for 9.18 are here but most dedicated players will be aware of the changes and many will have already checked out the reactions of players in the Americas to the update, as well as the heavy criticism the new LTs have got from popular WoT  YouTubers such as QuickyBaby and DezGamez.

We'll be playing the game in the next few days - and as a player who specialises in Light Tanks - with many of them three marked - we're dreading what's been done to some of our favourite vehicles. No more fun on the nerfed AMX ELC bis? Crap autoloader on the M41 Bulldog and the one on the SP I C gone? Little incentive to grind a tier X light when you would be better off spotting in a Bat.-Châtillon 25 t, a Leopard I or a Centurion Action X? Yeah, the potential for feeling Wargaming have failed us is certainly there.

However, we are going to give the benefit of the doubt to WG and actually play some games to properly form an opinion. There are always people to kill, even if on paper they have the vehicle advantage.

We're pretty sure that some of the tier X lights will have a use - some nations' vehicles are better than others, or so the Yanks have told us. There's also some fun to be have for those who enjoy LTs at lower tiers. The T-71 is the new Bulldog, or so it seems, keeping its autolader and benefiting the from the new -/+ 2 matchmaking. We're also hearing the Type 64 is a somewhat of a monster now, with the ability to fit a vertical stabilizer. You'll still run out of ammo in longer matches though!

Wargaming have declared their intention to concentrate much more on their main property in the coming years - and that main property is WoT. If this update truly makes the playerbase annoyed, you can expect some changes pretty quickly we think. The glacial pace of change WoT has had in recent years should be a thing of the past, if we believe WG's public statements.

We must also mention artillery - the reduced damage coupled to faster reloads and improved accuracy, albeit with a much larger splash area, is certainly a noble attempt to reduce player rage at arty. Being constantly stunned by arty sounds pretty frustrating though - and means less skilled players have a chance to react to a more skilled player outmanoeuvring them, if he suddenly can't move.

At heart, we think there is no real way of stopping players raging at arty. The simple fact is the target is being hit by somebody they usually can't shoot back at. And that just feels unfair to the victim.

Also key to the 9.18 update is how the new matchmaker works on the much busier EU and RU servers. This -/+ 2 tier MM which also uses mirror templates to balance the vehicles on both teams should really improve the game. Personally we're hoping to see some more all-tier X fights.
