Activision's reveal of the first trailer for Call of Duty World War 2 is a visceral slice of war movie as game.

It will take all of a few seconds for anyone who has seen Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers to see echoes of them both in the first COD WWII reveal trailer, with soldiers facing the beaches of Normandy as it throws us right into bloody action.

The series finally comes full circle and returns to the era of the original Call of Duty and the Allied invasion of France. How far it will continue into the conflict isn't clear - leaks talking of the Battle of the Bulge and "1945" tell us that it accelerates way beyond summer 1944, so let's assume expansions will take it all the way to post-war peace in Europe.

The story is hinged around a tight-knit squad of soldiers in the US 1st Infantry Division, which formed the eponymous core of another WW2 flick The Big Red One, with you playing Private Ronald 'Red' Daniels, but we will have to wait until June to get a lot more, with the game to feature heavily at E3.

Activision also revealed a little about the multiplayer aspects of the game, teasing 'War Mode' that will drop players into opposing sides of famous WW2 battles and theatres. It also mentioned a Zombie mode...

Activison also hinted at the appearance of armour in multiplayer under the banner of differing 'Divisions' that will form a player class and selection mechanic. Does this mean Battlefield-style fully mobilised gameplay?

The game launches on November 3, on PS4, Xbox One, and PC - and one assumes Xbox Scorpio as soon as it hits. Might this be a launch title? It's around the same time as Red Dead Redemption 2, so we might have a sneaky early date for Scorpio.

PS4 owners will get an early look at the game with access to a Beta.
