Portal movie edges closer as JJ Abrams reaffirms Valve tie-up

Crown Prince of modern movie culture says we should expect a cake-related announcement soon

When JJ Abrams (you know - Mr Star Trek, Mr Star Wars, Mr Mission Impossible) and Gabe Newell (Mr Valve) announced a tie-up in 2013 to bring the game and movie worlds together, gamers the world over licked their lips at what might come.

So far though, so quiet.

Abrams though has reassuring words after he revealed to IGN on a red carpet event in LA that a Portal announcement could be due sooner rather than later. He also explained that a Half Life film is also on his lengthy to-do list.

He told IGN: "We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon."

For an insight into what a Portal film could be like, check out Dan Trachtenberg's brilliant Portal short film from 2011 which prompted so many hopes for a movie of the games.

Trachtenberg's last project was to direct 2016 hit 10 Cloverfield Lane, which Abrams produced and is a shared universe 'sequel' to his own 2008 smash Cloverfield, so seems a natural fit to take moviegoers into Cave Johnson's Aperture Science Labs.
