Major video game releases of 2017; everyone getting hyped, have themselves to blame

2017 is bursting with interesting game releases. I hope everyone learned their lesson in 2016 and sets their hype machines to power saving mode. I'm looking at you No Man's Sky. So let us try and be reasonable this year, with marketing as well as purchases. Here is a short list of AAA releases, and games boasting AAA polish, so you can have a general sense for the year coming our way:

Ghost Recon: Wildlands Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

The Ghost recon series has ventured deeper into cinematic CoD-esque shooter territory and further away from its strategy/tactics roots over its entire lifespan. Regardless, it will be one of the more interesting releases of the coming year, and Wildlands will definitely show the direction the series definitely settled on.

Rockstar Red Dead Redemption 2... coming in late 2017 Red Dead Redemption 2... coming in late 2017

Red Dead Redemption 2

An eerie silence still surrounds Red Dead Redemption 2. That is about to change in the coming months as the games Q3-Q4 release moves closer. Rockstar doesn't skimp on marketing, when it comes - you will know, weather you like it or not.

Sniper Elite 4 Sniper Elite 4

Sniper Elite 4

Bigger maps with more vectors of approach, gory slow motion kills, the ability to manipulate light sources in the service of stealth, better AI than the previous games and overall improved visuals. Sounds like a proper sequel.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

The latest resident evil is first-person and advertised as a lot more of a horror game compared to some of its predecessors. Numerous demos inspire confidence, but we will know soon enough, as the game is set to release ina a few short weeks.

Agents of Mayhem Agents of Mayhem

Agents of Mayhem

The cartoonish Saints Row spin-off looks and feels like a Saints game, with an aesthetic and thematic twist, while retaining a unique sense of humor.

Squad Squad

Squad aims to bridge the gap between hard-core simulation military first person shooters and the arcade style variety of the same genre along the lines of Call of Duty of Battlefield. In addition, it boasts a strong emphasis on voice based player cooperation.

Tekken 7 Tekken 7

Tekken 7

Tekken is coming to PC this year and is adding a host of new mechanics and moves for the occasion.

For Honor For Honor

For Honor

Vikings, knights and samurai battle it out in combat heavy hack and slash title scheduled for a mid-February release. A strong emphasis on positioning and fighting styles will be decisive to the games combat.

BioWare/EA Mass Effect: Andromeda Mass Effect: Andromeda

Mass Effect: Andromeda

The continuation of the Mass Effect series needed another galaxy, since no one is quite sure what happened to the old one after the third game's controversial ending. Exploration, a complex story and lots of player freedom are probably going to be on the back of the box for this one.

Remember when Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord made us think of scenes like this? Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord

Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord

The first Mount and Blade and its stand-alone expansions were a surprise hit. The sequel seems to be aiming at doing all the things a proper sequel should - taking all the mechanics at its roots and upgrading, polishing and adding to them in meaningful ways.

Torment: Tides of Numenera Torment: Tides of Numenera

Torment: Tides of Numenara

One of the biggest successes of the recent Inifinity-engine revival, the KickStarter driven Torment is due for release on February 28th. A fantasy-science-fiction setting and lots of player influenced narrative goodness are part of the promise. Hopes are high, based on the game's creators reputation. 2017 will show wether it holds up.

Camelot Unchained Camelot Unchained

Camelot Unchained

Three years in the making, a new tri-faction MMORPG focused around numerically massive PvP is on its way to rekindle the glory days of Dark Age of Camelot. Funded through Kickstarter, doubled down by the game's lead designer and further funded by private investors Camelot Unchained has a solid footing. With the added feature of player made bases the game is looking like a potentially endless well of pure unapologetic fun.

RSI Star Citizen Star Citizen

Star Citizen

Star Citizen has reached mythical proportions ever since its initial Kickstarter run. The FPS module of the game has become fully operational in 2016 and the developers continue to toil away in the attempt to fulfil all the potential the game has to offer. Weather Star Citizen will manage to reach full completion in 2017 still remains to be seen, but it sure is coming real close.

Red Barrels Outlast 2 Outlast 2

Outlast II

The first Outlast was a surprise hit in 2013. The sequel is quite confident of itself, even going as far as offering potential players a free change of underwear along with the boxed game.

Prey to the Gods Prey to the Gods

Prey for the Gods

Heavy Shadow of the Colossus influence is plainly on display for this title, with some trendy survival game elements added to the mix.

Subnautica Subnautica

The development team that previously brought you Natural Selection is diving deep to for a underwater survival and exploration game. Ocean depths are an environment quite hostile to human life, so its a little strange more game studios haven't taken a shot at this setting.

Heavy metal fun - BattleTech Heavy metal fun - BattleTech

Turn-based tactics in set in the Battletech universe, with giant robots beating the nuts and bolts out of each other, while surrounded by hexes on all sides. With the original creators of the game system and setting on board with development, few things can go wrong.

Relic Dawn of War 3 logo with a bunch of skulls in the background Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War 3

Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War 3

Relic Entertainment is almost synonymous for a quality and action packed RTS, with some good story and atmosphere on the side. The third instalment of the Dawn of War series is close to release and a lot of the games features have already been made public.

Dreadnought - Capital Ships Exchange Pleasantries Dreadnought - Capital Ships Exchange Pleasantries

Dreadnought will soon be moving to open beta and probably release in short order. Think World of Warships, but with space juggernauts and with the addition of a third dimension for tactical arena mayhem.
