The first AAA take on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has entered the arena with reports of more than solid player counts. Epic Games have announced that the Battle Royale free-to-play standalone mode for Fortnite has attracted over half a million concurrent players over the past weekend.
In spite of Bluehole's vocal protest, Epic's Fortnite Battle Royale has launched to some success as the studio reports around 3,7 million daily active users, 500,000 of which happened to be online at the same time.

That represents roughly a quarter of the numbers that its chief battle royale inspiration manages to pull in. Fortnite BR has been available as a sandalone and free-to-play mode for the base game since 26 September 2017, so those numbers are nothing to scoff at.
Epic have neglected to mention which platform exactly those player numbers are coming from, or whether they are the sum of all accounts and players across three platforms. Fortnite is already available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as opposed to PUBG which is still only playale on PC.
You will have a hard time finding the game if your first impulse after hearing free-to-play was to look it up on Steam. Fortnite uses Epic's own launcher, and you can get it over at their web-site. The launcher doesn't take up too prominent a position on the site, but the Get Epic Game button should get you where you want to be.
Epic's take on the freshly solidified genre boasts the same 100-player last man standing gameplay, with the addition of a construction system and a cartoony artstyle very different from what you might be used to from PUBG or H1Z1.
The original Fortnite is constructed around some heavy use of RNG and similar microincetive bits, but Epic have stated on every possible occasion that the crates, purchases and unlocks for their battle royale mode are purely cosmetic and have little impact on actual gameplay. This we shall investigate at a later date.
Another thing you can do, should you decide to burden your battlestation with one more launcher/client, is to check up on how far along the latest iteration of Unreal Tournament has come in the last few years.
