Ignited Artists, a developer studio comprised of Activision and Sega veterans are working on a new game. Barbaric is a co-op roguelike, until it's not. The game will be available sometime in Q4 2017.

Barbaric is a cooperative roguelike set in a grimdark fantasy realm, slated for a release in Q4 2017. The game will be available for PC via Steam. Barbaric is under development by Ignited Artists - a group of industry veterans with a former Vice President at Activision Blizzard and Executive Producer at Sega spearheading the project.

"Barbaric will deliver endlessly-replayable dungeon-crawling" - says the press release. The world of Aldderas is encased in "eternal night" and a group of heroes come together in order to defeat the forces of evil and fulfil the prophecy. Each hero has unique abilities that make the player's journey that much easier.

There are eight different heroes to choose from and the game supports online co-op missions in order to get you alive through "procedurally-generated dungeons and the ancient evils within".

Four heroes have been announced so far:

  • Neadra, the Lightfury Prophet
  • Edrek, the Stoneborn Chieftain
  • Sloarn, the Firstborn Outcast
  • Miba, the Fieldkin Heroine

"Each race and hero possesses distinct talents with the ability to augment their powers and strengthen the party".

The press release also talks about thoughtfulness on the battlefield and deep, highly-customizable actions. Also, you can't go around flailing your weapon of choice willy-nilly around the battlefield. There's friendly fire to be taken into consideration.

All that co-op and comradery goes out the window once the final boss falls dead. Then, the friendly-fire I talked about a second ago becomes extremely unfriendly: "teammates can backstab each other and fight for the right to bring home the boss token, which one hero can exchange for powerful loot."

Scott Foe, Game Director of Barbaric said: "Combat is the heart of every dungeon-crawler, but where can you find the best combat? Fighting games". He continued: "We tossed out everything from the classics and borrowed from fighting games to deliver the smoothest, most-thoughtful experience in the genre".

"Great gameplay is paramount to the Barbaric experience, and Barbaric is also the most-visually beautiful roguelike ever created. The world has been waiting 37 years for this game," adds Alessandro Tento, Ignited Artists’ Chief Executive. More info here.
